    Top Tips: Researching Your Holiday

So you’ve decided that you deserve a holiday? Sounds simple enough, but before you jet off into the sunset or click that compelling ‘Book’ button, what are the things you need to consider? Research is the key to getting the most from your break and the more time you put into planning, the more you can be sure that you’ve taken all the necessary steps to help find a getaway that’s perfect for you. At alpharooms.com we know the importance of good groundwork and have created this guide to help you with the initial stage of researching your holiday:

    Decide on the Country

This sounds fairly straightforward, but if your criterion is simply somewhere warm, then narrowing it down to a particular country can be easier said than done. Instead think about what else you’d like from a holiday; somewhere with fantastic food? Try Greece; somewhere with gorgeous sandy beaches? Portugal’s a good bet. Somewhere where you can let your hair down? How about Ibiza?

    Decide on the Area

Now it’s time to research those resorts. This is a fairly crucial stage, as if you’ve decided on a trip to Cyprus with the children you won’t want to find yourself in a hotel in bustling Ayia Napa. Likewise, if you’re looking to dance the night away you might be disappointed with tranquil Pissouri. Take a look on alpharooms.com at some of our informative resort guides or read online reviews to find the area best suited to your needs.

    Check Your Passport

Most countries state that your passport needs to be valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of entry for you to admitted. However, make sure you visit the FCO website for advice specific to your destination. If your passport doesn’t meet the requirements, then you’ll need to renew it. You can do this via the Passport Office website or by using the Check and Send service at the Post Office. If you don’t own a passport, this is also the time to apply.

    Check the Weather

It might seem like some holiday destinations are warm year-round, but sadly that isn’t the case for the majority. Take a look at the average local weather for the month you’re considering travelling so you know what to expect. If travelling further than Europe, you should also check the dates of hurricane and/or monsoon season so that bargain break doesn’t turn into a wash out!

    Decide on Rough Dates

You probably know roughly when you want to travel, but in this initial stage the more flexible you can be with your dates the more potential deals you open yourself up to. If you don’t have children, make yourself aware of the school holiday times so that you can avoid the higher prices that fall during this period.

    Look into Flights

Now that you know the rough dates, it’s time to look for flights. First you’ll want to find the nearest airport to your chosen resort, then start comparing the flights available. On alpharooms.com, you can filter your results by departure times, cost, airline and stops – meaning everything from budget bargains to airborne luxury are available to you.

    Decide on the Hotel

Your search for the resort and rough dates will likely have brought up a plethora of different hotels. Now it’s time to break these down. If you prefer a more luxurious abode you might want to sort your resorts by star rating so those are the top end of the scale are shown first. If you’re after all-inclusive deals where all your meals and drinks are included in the up-front cost, then select this from our left-hand menu. You can even search by facilities so only hotels with kid’s clubs, swimming pool and free Wi-Fi will show up. This is your time to be fussy – so go for it! You can always unselect options later if you find you aren’t getting enough results. Also, don’t forget to double check the reviews of your shortlisted few. You can even search by TripAdvisor review score on our site from the very beginning, taking the hassle away.

    Decide on the Board Type

If you haven’t already selected the room type as one of your search criteria, this is the time to look for it. At alpharooms.com we list the different board types available on each hotel when relevant, so you can choose the right one for your needs. The options are usually room only (no meals), bed and breakfast (breakfast included), self-catering (the accommodation will include the facilities you need to prepare your own meals), half-board (breakfast and lunch or evening meal included), and all inclusive (all meals, snacks and local drinks included).

    Book Time Off Work

So you’ve researched the top deals, decided on your resort and you’re almost ready to book? We’re sorry to burst your bubble but before you go you’ll need to request the time off work. We know there’s nothing worse than waiting on your line manager when your hankering to book, book, book, but hold your horses, this time you’re almost there!
