Relaxing holidays are wonderful: prancing around on the beach like a happy dogfish, basking in the sun and only moving for a quick dip in the sea. Lazily floating from one day of relaxing bliss to the next until there’s no stress left and you’re floppier than a jellyfish. But for those of you wanting a change of pace, who want racing hearts and breathless moments, there are some amazing destinations that scream ADVENTURE from the top of their lungs.
Blustery adventures in Tarifa, Spain
Tarifa is blessed with a strong wind, making it a hallowed destination for windsurfers, surfers and kite-boarders. It’s a great destination for combining the comforts of a beach holiday with trying something new. Kite-boarding uses a small board (similar to a surf board) attached to a kite to power across the sea at high speeds. Kite-boarding in Tarifa is perfect for exhilarating fun in the sunshine followed by an afternoon relaxing on the beach.
Lunar landscapes and volcanic activity in the Canaries
The Canaries are a great destination for families who want to introduce a little bit of adventure into their holidays. This is due to the vastly wild and unique landscapes of the islands, inland from the sandy beaches and holiday hotspots. These landscapes range from the moon-like to Saharan, from vast mountains to lush ravines. Try to see as much of your chosen island as you can and we promise you’ll return home feeling like you’ve been off exploring different planets.
Shipwreck exploring in Cyprus
Swap coral and turtles for the eerie atmosphere of the shipwrecked Zenobia in Cyprus. It sank in 1980 with over 100 of its truck cargo still attached; the wreck is huge and usually takes more than one dive to be fully explored. It has great reviews on Trip Advisor and received a Certificate of Excellence in 2014. The wreck lies just outside Larnaca harbour so after a day exploring beneath the waves you can retreat to one of Cyprus’ most popular holiday towns to relax.
Terrifying drops in Switzerland
Calling all James Bond fans. Remember Bond’s fall from the 220 meter high Verzasca dam in the movie GoldenEye? You can recreate the action and adventure yourself by taking part in a bungy jump from the actual Verzasca dam. Would you dare? Skydiving is another popular adventure activity in Switzerland; appreciate the snow capped mountains and glacial lakes as you fall hundreds of feet to the ground.
Scaling new heights in Kalymnos, Greece
Climbing on the Greek island of Kalymnos kicked off in the 90s. It’s now a haven for climbers and a great place to get your adventure on! There are plenty of routes to choose from and lots of courses, from beginner to expert, so if you want to get your heart racing whilst taking in some gorgeous Agean sea views then this is the adventure sport for you. Stay in nearby holiday fave Kos and hop on the ferry to Kalymnos (approx 1 hour) for your adventure fix.
Treehouse adventures in Sweden
Treat yourself to a night or two in Sweden’s most adventurous hotel, the Treehotel. Evoke your inner adventurer and stay in one of 6 unique tree house rooms, each suspended 4-6 metres from the ground and each with a very unique exterior. Choose from the Mirrorcube (a room completely camouflaged by mirrors), the Bird’s Nest (designed to look exactly like a giant bird’s nest) and the UFO to name a few. What better way to celebrate your adventurous side than by braving one of these incredibly usual hotel rooms.
Wow-yourself walking in the Samaria Gorge, Crete
The rough, majestic terrain of the Samaria Gorge in Crete is beautiful; it has breathtaking rock formations, an abundance of flora and fauna and a beach at the end. It’s a long hike and is challenging in parts, but those who complete the walk will tell you its 100% worth it. Check out its Trip Advisor reviews for past visitors’ advice and how they found it. This is a great piece of adventure to fit into an otherwise relaxing holiday in Crete.
Ice-capades in Sweden
Go on your very own snowy expedition to Sweden’s Icehotel. Icehotel is one of only several hotels in the world made completely of snow and ice. Freezing temperatures, beautiful ice suites, snow and ice artwork plus plenty of snow activities like dog sledding, ice driving and skiing all make this the perfect destination for a full-blown adventure. Don your thermal clothing and enjoy the thrill of sleeping in such an amazing, unusual hotel and such a breathtaking location.
